NIDAC Online Consultation 1: Alcohol

WHAT IS NIDAC?

NIDAC was established in 2004 by the Australian National Council on Drugs (ANCD) and aims to reduce alcohol and other drug problems and associated harms in Indigenous communities nationally. NIDAC’s role is to assist the ANCD in providing advice to government on a range of issues that impact on Indigenous communities and ways of addressing the serious drug and alcohol issues that exist for Indigenous Australians.

WHY IS NIDAC UNDERTAKING THIS CONSULTATION?

A key component to NIDAC strengths and its ability to provide high level independent advice to government is its capacity to consult with the AOD sector and the Indigenous community.

NIDAC recognizes that to obtain valuable information on harmful Indigenous AOD issues and to provide useful feedback to those working to address these issues, a comprehensive approach is required to ensure all interested persons have the ability to make their views heard.

Consequently, NIDAC has initiated a process of online consultation, through surveys such as this one, as a means to gain access to the views and concerns of people working to reduce the harms of AOD among Indigenous communities all around Australia.

WHAT DOES NIDAC WANT TO KNOW?

This consultation focuses on issues related to alcohol. At the Inaugural National Indigenous Drug and Alcohol Conference, held in Adelaide in June 2010, discussion took place among participants about the need for governments to implement a range of interventions to reduce rates of problematic alcohol use and their associated harms in Indigenous communities. Consequently, NIDAC determined that the first NIDAC online consultation was a good way to hear views on issues related to alcohol.    > > > >  Read More
